WORKSHOP W/ NAZBAH TOM
MAY 4, 2021 - 3PM EST
EMBODYING RESISTANCE
This experiential workshop introduces participants to an awareness of how they can relate to their bodies and how they can practice returning to a grounded and centred way of being through somatic practices. By engaging in these practices, participants can utilize it to set an intention for this particular conference, to engage in what can be difficult anti-oppressive processes including conversation, learning new information, and engaging in building a world we all want to live and thrive in. If oppressive dynamics shape us to think, feel, and behave a certain way to support those oppressive systems, we can also become aware of how we have been shaped and begin to push back on those oppressive systems by learning to be in our somas (mind/body/spirit) so it is more aligned with our values and what we care. Usually how we have been shaped by oppressive systems is misaligned with our own values and who or what we care about.
FACILITATOR:
NAZBAH TOM
Nazbah Tom (Diné) is a somatic practitioner. Their original training is in drama therapy which offered an experiential form of psychotherapy with individuals and groups. As a somatic practitioner they use a combination of conversation, breath work, gestural work, bodywork, and incorporating new somatic skills to support and guide individuals and groups through a process of embodied transformation.
Nazbah generously guided us through some somatic techniques that may be helpful before or after a heavy session. Find below four offerings. Return to them as needed.
"Repetition of a new practice ensures we first become familiar with them and then embody so it becomes a part of who we are. These practices will help us towards our individual and collective world building of the realities we want to live inside of." -Nazbah Tom
